Rumor: Apple Wants Sony Blu-ray Drives for MacBook Pros [Rumor]

AppleInsider says Apple is “actively” poking Sony (as opposed to other BR manufacturers) for slot-loading Blu-ray drives for MacBook Pros—Apple supposedly even wanted to offer BR SuperDrives with the new Penryn-powered machines, but “quality issues” meant Sony could only deliver combo drives. Apple said shno thanks for now. Reasonably, summer wouldn’t be a bad time to expect them to come through, especially with the even more efficient Montevina chipset to offset Blu-ray’s battery-killing .

But, Apple’s official support for Blu-ray has been completely non-existent despite its exceedingly long rumor half-life. On the other hand, Blu-ray’s victory logically means we’ll see them populating more computers in (sorta) short order, now that the risk of shipping machines with $300 drink holders is gone. Sony’s launching mylo labs to keep your COM-2 in the widgets

Filed under: Handhelds If you’ve already dropped $299 on a second-gen mylo COM-2 unit, then Sony has a little treat for you — while all of you early adopters still poking around on an original mylo probably feel pretty silly right now. Sony is launching the “mylo labs” site for nabbing mylo widgets, and while right now there are just a few Sony-built widgets, Sony will open up the site to developers in March to add their own.

Sony is launching the “mylo labs” site for nabbing mylo widgets, and while right now there are just a few Sony-built widgets, Sony will open up the site to developers in March to add their own. Widgets seem to be a natural fit for a device like this, and hey, they’re free, so there’s really no reason not to love. It’s just too bad those gen-one types get left out in the cold.

Sony and Samsung may expand LCD partnership

Filed under: HDTV Despite Samsung’s solo expansion plans and Sony’s alliance with Sharp, the two are not only maintaining their current 8th-generation LCD line, but may build another one, and a new plant after that. A source within Samsung told Reuters of the almost-final plans for a second 8G line from S-LCD, and the possibility that Samsung will cut Sony in on its 10th-generation facility, much like the one its already partnering with Sharp on.

Like Sharp, Samsung likely wants to be sure someone will buy all those flat panels once the line is running, and Sony can make sure its got a cheap source to stay competitive on prices when competition will be even higher in 2010. The only thing we can be sure of is it will be nearly impossible to tell who really made that flat panel hanging on your wall, no matter what brand name it says.

Sony exec sees Eee-like PCs as having potentially negative impact on industry

Filed under: LaptopsSo at Sony’s Open House we were having lunch with Mike Abary, Sony’s US SVP of Information Technology Products Division, who oversees Vaio computers (among numerous other things). Of course, the inevitable question came up about the Eee PC’s success thus far, and what that means to computer companies on the higher end of the spectrum, like Sony.

(Asus has less to worry about here because its primary business is making PCs for other companies. ) Of course, the reality is that ultra-cheap machines probably won’t soon envelop the lion’s share of computer sales and threaten what most think of as “real” PCs, so we probably don’t have to worry about the industry bottoming out because of the Eee. False advertising and abusive trialware, however, are different stories entirely.

Sony’s PS3 headtracking system does it all with a camera

Filed under: Gaming We were already blown away by Johnny Lee’s headtracking demo using a Wiimote, but it looks like Sony’s trying to take it mainstream in a much slicker way. The company was demoing a PS3-based headtracking system at GDC that doesn’t require any special IR glasses to function — it just uses a bone-stock Playstation Eye camera to track your ugly mug around the room.

Sony says it’s not announcing the system for any games yet, but we can’t imagine devs aren’t clamoring for this to get official — this would be amazing for all sorts of genres. Video after the break.
