OLPC’s Negroponte Not Exactly Looking For a Successor (Plus XO Getting Windows in 60 Days) [Olpc]

Reports OLPC Negroponte looking for a replacement to fill the role of general manager was a little unfounded, as the man himself said only that the non HAS CEO, and that everything that makes replacement, is not doing what that Negroponte. Negroponte said: replacement is not the right word. We have no CEO. I have never argued that neither the title used. I will continue doing what I do, not a real change.

Asus Eee PC To Get Windows XP?

You no longer need to perform your very own hack if you want to run Windows XP on your Asus Eee PC, as it looks as though the Taiwanese computer manufacturer will probably roll out a Windows XP version pretty soon if this poster at CeBIT is anything to go by. Guess the flash memory inside the Eee PC will be replaced by a good old hard drive, and the sub-$500 price tag will probably be unattainable considering the Windows XP license.

Linpus rolls out Linux-based OS aimed at low-cost laptops / UMPCs

Filed under: LaptopsWhile its claim of being the “first” to offer an OS specifically designed for the latest crop of low-cost laptops and UMPCs may be a little dubious, the unfortunately-named Linpus is at least pretty quick to jump on the bandwagon. To that end, the company’s just let loose its Linpus Linux Lite OS, which it says will run just fine on laptops like the Eee PC and Cloudbook, or any other system with as little as a 500MHz CPU, 128MB of RAM and 512MB of storage.

Just as importantly, the OS is also apparently designed with low-res 7-inch screens in mind, although as CLUMPC points out, it doesn’t go so far as to include support for little things like built-in WiFi out of the box. Still, if you want to give it a shot, you can grab it now in the form of a Live CD direct from Linpus.  Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments.

Linux Runs On Wii

The people at Game Cube Linux claim to have developed a proof of concept version of Linux that runs on the Nintendo Wii in native mode, exploiting the quirk known as the Twilight Hack which allows external software to be loaded without having to perform specialized hardware modifications. This hack will trick the system into loading code from an SD memory card, and hence we have Linux on the Wii.

Hopefully Nintendo opens up its platform to third party developers in order to be on par with Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 where third party development is concerned. Basically, this takes the advantage of an exploitable overflow in the Zelda game via gamesave, and using it to trigger the launch of an experimental proof-of-concept “Hello World” type-app.

If you have no idea what that means, it says that a hacked saved game tricks the Zelda game into running hacked code.

Vista Capable Sticker Lawsuit Becomes Class Action [Windows Vista]

Remember the lawsuit filed a little while ago against Microsoft because PCs with “Windows Vista Capable” stickers weren’t actually all that Vista Capable? A federal judge just granted that suit class action status, meaning that if you bought a Vista “Capable” PC during the 2006 Holidays, you might be in store to get a little bit of cash back. The US District Court Judge says the suit can “pursue a ‘price inflation’ line of reasoning,” which means that buyers were duped into paying more for a com.

The US District Court Judge says the suit can “pursue a ‘price inflation’ line of reasoning,” which means that buyers were duped into paying more for a computer that did have that sticker than one that did not, even though the difference between the two were negligible (and both weren’t actually Vista-capable). We’ll update you as the case develops.

That's right, now you can have your mojo wherever you want, and run the hard disk portable USB memory, or even with its own Windows XP operating system on it. It is very similar to other offers in the Linux world, as Puppy Linux (more about that later). This pack mojo really seem to be working. He charged into a USB memory connected with the stick on my computer and voila, I can run Windows XP from the stick.

Security loophole in Windows operating system

A group of scientists headed by Dr. Benny Pinkas from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Haifa succeeded in finding a security vulnerability in Microsoft’s “Windows 2000″ operating system. The significance of the loophole: emails, passwords, credit card numbers, if they were typed into the computer, and actually all correspondence that emanated from a computer using “Windows 2000″ is susceptible to tracking.

Anyone who exploits this security loophole can definitely access this information on other computers,” remarked Dr.

3DLABS Windows CE BSP

3DLABS will be parading its Windows CE BSP (Board Support Package) at Embedded World, Nuremberg, Germany, bringing the advantages of the DMS-02’s fully programmable media processing array and dual ARM architecture to the masses. The DMS-02 claims to deliver “unrivalled application and media performance for embedded and low-power consumer electronics devices such as connected media players, portable navigation units, service terminals, smartphones and gaming devices”.

I don’t know how far its dual ARM 926 multi-core System-On-Chip processors are able to handle 2D/3D graphics and video encoding/decoding and image processing though, but it sure sounds promising in theory. [Press Release]Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones.
