By the power of Grayskull Wii and the TV Guide Channel, I will use my Mighty Wiimote to mount the TV channels and control the TV volume, and from now on, you will be called. . . TWiimote! Finally, the circle is complete. [Nintendo Wii Fanboy].

Using two candles as a Wii Sensor Bar replacementUsing two candles as a Wii Sensor Bar replacement
Quick note: Yes, this is the ORIGINAL Sensor Bar candle video. After this was posted, many others followed suit, including Joystiq.com. IGN.com even made several references to it in their articles an blogs, and someone referenced it in Wikipedia.

Many have heard that the Wii’s Sensor Bar does not really sense anything at all but that the remote does all the detection sort of like a monochrome digital camera. What many do not realize is that the Sensor Bar is just two sets of IR LEDs that emit just enough light to be detected by the remote for triangulation.

Knowing this, I decided to do an experiment. I turned out all the lights in my living room and lit two candles about three feet apart beneath my projector screen, seeing as they emit several wavelengths of light, both visible and beyond. Surprisingly it worked atleast as well as Sensor Bar when directly in front of the screen (but worse far to the left or right) because of the combination of increased IR light output and increased distance. Any two IR sources will potentially work in this manner (including two TV/DVD remotes with any buttons held).

The video was recorded on a Cingular 8125 set to “cool” (bluescale) to capture enough light. At the beginning of the video, I hold up the pack-in sensor bar to show that it is not plugged into the Wii (since it’s tough to tell in the very low light of the room). I then grab the Wii Remote and navigate the menus to pull up Wii Sports.

Nintendo wants your money for online “Pay & Play” gaming?

Filed under: Nintendo game could not have been more blunt in his announcement last week at GDC, but from the aspect that it will not be entirely free to enjoy Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection play forever. Nintendo is upgrading a new service Pay & Play for certain games, which seems to refer to both downloadable content for some titles, and online multiplayer for others.

Aside from that Nintendo does not extend much - we have no idea what titles will cost money to play, and how much they will be - but given the fact that Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart are just about to make the game online at the Wii really interesting, this is not exactly an encouraging sign. [Register Via Hardware] Read | Permalink | Mail | Comments.

The Evolution of Nintendo’s Superheroes [Pic]

Here is a really great picture facing the real roots of the three big boys Nintendo, Mario, Link and Donkey Kong. There is no character monochrome love of the old days adequate, but it is an extensive timeline, however, culminating in the modern incarnations of our beloved superheroes. The things that we have learned of the image include the fact that Donkey Kong once had breasts larger than Pamela, Link has been known to walk around his hat and without Mario has not always.

The things that we have learned of the image include the fact that Donkey Kong once had breasts larger than Pamela, Link has been known to walk around his hat and without Mario has not always had enough pixels for a moustache well defined. It is quite shocking all things; brace yourself and jump in the money shot. [Fubiz through Notcot].

Nintendo’s Wii Pay & Play Charges For Premium Online Content [Gaming]

Nintendo, the current third-place for online console gaming features, just announced Wii Pay & Play. What this means exactly is still fairly vague, but Nintendo says they will collect “fees for some services [that] will allow us to adapt flexibly. ” To us this says that they’ll start charging for some online content or functionality (either for downloads or for the privilege of playing certain games online) in order to provide an even richer (read: not that lousy friend code garbage) functionalit.
