Dell brings Precision M2300, M4300 laptops into the Penryn fold

Filed under: LaptopsIt’s already extended Penryn updates to its Precision M6300 laptop and a couple of Inspirons, but Dell’s unsurprisingly not done yet, and it’s now doled out similar upgrades to its Precision M2300 and M4300 models. Those are each now available with Penryn processors ranging from 2. 1GHz to 2. 6GHz, and for the same price as the earlier Merom processors, although Dell warns that opting for Penryn on the M2300 may delay your ship date.

Otherwise, you can load ‘em up with a max 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB SSD drives, but you’ll have to make do with an NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M for graphics. If that’s not too much of a compromise, you can customize your system right now by hitting up the appropriate link below. Dell snaps Penryn chips into Precision M6300, X9000 included

Filed under: LaptopsAs the Penryn updates slow to a trickle, Dell is looking out for one remaining straggler by updating the potent Precision M6300 workstation. Starting today, users can select either the 2. 6GHz T9500 Core 2 Duo or the drool-worthy 2. 8GHz X9000 Core 2 Extreme, but curiously enough, only the T9500 is listed as an option ($370 upgrade over the base T7500) when entering the US configuration site.

Nevertheless, we reckon Dell will have that sorted soon enough, and while you’re ordering, why not indulge in the 512MB NVIDIA Quadro FX 3600M, too? It’s only an extra $699, after all.

White House Home Theater Reveals Laura Bush’s Bordello Tastes [White House]

This is what the Prez and his people watch their Chuck Norris movies in: the White House home theater. It’s, er, very red, isn’t it? The refurb was overseen by Laura Bush in 2004, who was, apparently, inspired by turn-of-the-last century movie palaces. Another shot, plus the magnolia hell that was its previous incarnation, below. The wide-ass seats were installed during the Reagan administration.

The wide-ass seats were installed during the Reagan administration. The former cloakroom (FDR converted it into a theater in 1942) used to look like this before its revamp. Visitors must have dug that crazy juxtaposition of chintz and magnolia alongside the Bruce Willis movies. And what speakers do POTUS and the gang get their movies piped through? Massachusetts firm Snell provides the sound.

Dell’s “Affordable” XPS 630 Gaming System Starts at $1249, But Will Probably Cost You More [PCs]

Dell wanted to bring its gaming platform down from the $2000 and up arena, and into something average gamers can go and buy, so it’s rolling out the previously teased XPS 630. For build-to-order you start at $1249 and a pre-fab $1299 edition comes with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and dual NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB graphics cards with SLI technology.

But the expansion possibilities in the standard ATX chassis include overclockable Corsair Dominator memory and Intel Extreme processors, up to three factory installed HDDs (with a fourth bay for your own tinkering) and an optional AGEIA PhysX accelerator. In other words, reading the fine print, it sounds like no one is going to be satisfied with the base config—even though it will come with pretty LED lighting zones that synchronize with game play.
