How would you change Apple’s Penryn-based MacBook Pro?

Filed under: Features, Notebooks While the whole world and his second cousin third had removed something to say about Apple ultra-sexy, ultra-hampered MacBook air, we have a sneaking suspicion that previously people anxious about the issues of the week MacBook Pro updates equally vocal. For whatever reason, Cupertino faithful have linked February 26 on your calendar, and while the addition of one or two Penryn is almost a given, the dreamers in the crowd had much higher hopes for that fateful Tuesday.

An option for an SSD? And the built-in Blu-ray drive? Are Integrated HDMI make things more attractive? Or is it a top-down redesign case the only thing to stop abusing his credit card in the name of Steve Jobs? I mean, we know that people are full of good ideas, so let's hear 'em, do you? Apple “actively courting” Sony for slot-loading Blu-ray drives?

Filed under: Notebooks, StorageWe know, we have a tired Apple Blu-ray and rumors - which are right up there with renewed Cinema Displays in terms of persistent rumour - but until Steve and the band really pushing a unit A machine that we are stuck with them. The latter says that Apple is actively lobbying for Sony slot-loading BD-R units of quality control, but questions are gumming up the plan.

This seems a bit strange, frankly - now that the format is more than war and the competence of shipping and mid-range laptops with slot-loading BD-R drives, you would think that Apple wants cash Blu - ray Disc Association member with the card that can provide units. As always, we will see when we look at - it has to happen sometime, right? [Image courtesy of dadako.

Time Capsule Initial Verdict: Smooth Sailing, No Surprises [Apple]

We’ve been fiddling with Time Capsule since it arrived this AM, and so far it works as billed, clean and easy. The star of the show is really the new AirPort Utility software, which now comes with some neat tricks for the network-phobic. Most of all, we’re learning the ins and outs of adding external drives, using networked printers, and setting up that potentially nasty initial data dump.

But there’s a cost, particularly at the 1TB model, which is $200 more than the $300 500GB model. When we ask about this, all we get back is that these are “server grade” drives. Great, thanks, but we’re gonna recommend the 500GB version. If you have 300GB of backup or less you’re covered, and if you have 1TB of backup or more, you’re better off scoring some massive drive or drive array at discount, and plugging it in via USB.

Rumor: Apple Wants Sony Blu-ray Drives for MacBook Pros [Rumor]

AppleInsider says Apple is “actively” poking Sony (as opposed to other BR manufacturers) for slot-loading Blu-ray drives for MacBook Pros—Apple supposedly even wanted to offer BR SuperDrives with the new Penryn-powered machines, but “quality issues” meant Sony could only deliver combo drives. Apple said shno thanks for now. Reasonably, summer wouldn’t be a bad time to expect them to come through, especially with the even more efficient Montevina chipset to offset Blu-ray’s battery-killing .

But, Apple’s official support for Blu-ray has been completely non-existent despite its exceedingly long rumor half-life. On the other hand, Blu-ray’s victory logically means we’ll see them populating more computers in (sorta) short order, now that the risk of shipping machines with $300 drink holders is gone. Apple’s Time Capsule begins to ship

Looks like Apple has started to ship its Time Capsule - the newest external hard drive from Cupertino which is just about the only solution available for those who want to perform wireless Time Machine backups from your notebook. The Time Capsule debuted at Macworld, being an 802. 11n Wifi base station that was equipped with a choice of 500GB or 1TB hard drive, enabling you to back up files to the drive or share files across a network without having to hook up to a cable.

Hopefully Apple can include such a capability into future software updates for Leopard instead of forcing ordinary folks like you and I to purchase the Time Capsule if we want to do a wireless backup. Apple sued over iPhone caller ID

Filed under: CellphonesPhew, we were starting to worry we’d get through the week without someone suing Apple. This time it’s a patent lawsuit by a Massachusetts man named Romek Figa, who claims to have patented a caller ID system infringed by the iPhone. Figa’s patent, which was granted in 1990 and references two-line LCD screens and external caller ID equipment, describes a way to associate incoming numbers with stored contact names, and he’s looking to halt sales of the iPhone and have Apple p.

” Interesting — but they also said Figa sent his demand letter directly to Steve Jobs, which seems like the least efficient way possible of handling this deal. Apple MacBook Pro (with Penryn and multi-touch) unboxing

Filed under: Features, Laptops We just got our 2. 5GHz Penryn / 4GB fourth-gen MacBook Pro. Plenty of power under that hood, but the outward differences are few: it’s got the new, reorganized F-key layout (which we’re not all that fond of), and the trackpad physically the same (with the addition of multi-touch, which works just as well as it did on the MacBook Air).

We’ll have some updated benchmarks shortly. P. S. -It includes the same model 60Wh battery they’ve been selling on these for a while, for those puzzled about the battery life changes made to the Apple’s MBP spec page. Apple MacBook Pro Penryn tests: a little more speed, a lot less heat

Filed under: Features, Laptopsdigg_url = ‘http://digg. com/apple/MacBook_Pro_Penryn_tests_little_more_speed_a_lot_less_heat’; Sure, more speed is great, but on OS X most bumps don’t have an appreciable effect on everyday work (unless all you’re doing is video encoding). We were more interested in what Intel’s Penryn processors can do for the MBP’s heat envelope, so we maxed out both CPU cores in this brand new machine at let ‘em crank for a half an hour.
