Scientists Date Corpses by Looking into Their Eyes [Science]
|
A team of Danish researchers have discovered a way of dating corpses through the corpse of the eye using a nuclear particle accelerator. The procedure, which measures the amount of carbon isotopes in the lens of the eye, it has been possible due to atomic weapons tests half a century ago. The technique works only for people born after 1950 and will only be valid until the levels of carbon from the isotype have returned to normal, probably 100 years. "We believe carbon dating of proteins and other molecules in the body can be used for the study of certain tissues when they generate or regenerated," says Niels Lynnerup Associate Professor in the Department of Forensic Sciences in Denmark. "This could, for example, be applied to cancer tissue and cancer cells. Calculation of the amount of C-14 in these tissues could tell when the cancerous tissue is formed and this could further our understanding of these diseases. |
